The growth of Acme Corrugated Box Co.,
Inc. is a classic story of family, hard work, and the American
dream. Edward J. Cohen founded Acme in 1918 selling scrap paper out
of a horse drawn wagon. He eventually determined that there was a
business selling reclaimed corrugated boxes and factory rejects to a
wide variety of customers in the Greater Philadelphia market. In
1938 Mr. Cohen incorporated his company and moved to its new
location at 3rd and Race Streets in Philadelphia. At that location
the company prospered after the war years and into the 1950’s and
1960’s. During those years Mr. Cohen’s sons, Arnold and Bob,
assisted him while finishing school. Due to illness in 1963, Mr.
Cohen relinquished his role in the business to his oldest son
Arnold. Mr. Cohen died in 1966 and in 1969 Bob joined the company.
In 1970, the company moved from 3rd and Race Streets to a 25,000
square foot building in the American Street corridor. In 1973 they
purchased their first manufacturing equipment and began to produce
corrugated boxes. New products were introduced, new employees were
hired and sales increased.
By 1980 Acme had outgrown the American
Street facility and moved to a 59,000 square foot facility in
Bensalem, Bucks County. In 1981 Arnold Cohen left the business and
Bob Cohen became President. The next two decades brought continued
growth. By the early 1990’s Acme embarked on a program (that
continues today) of utilizing the newest and most technologically
capable equipment to ensure it’s survival in an ever-increasing
competitive environment.
In 2001 Acme moved to its present
facility in Hatboro, Pennsylvania. With the addition of two
corrugators, Acme further integrated and expanded it’s manufacturing
capabilities. Presently Acme employs 150 people and is a
three-shift, six-day operation. Acme serves markets including
Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland and New York. Rounding
out the current management group is Ken Henry, General Manager,
Thomas Lebonitte, Operations Manager and David Platt, Chief
Financial Officer. They bring with them over 85 years combined
industry experience. Recently Bob has been joined by his two older
sons Erik and Jeremy representing the third generation of family
management. |
