Acme
Corrugated Box Co. was incorporated in 1938. Our original mission
was to distribute corrugated packaging supplies to the Greater
Philadelphia market. In 1973 Acme made the transition from
distributor to manufacturer. In 1980 the company moved to Bensalem,
PA where we operated as a corrugated sheet plant for the next
twenty-one years.
Early
in the 1990's the company recognized the appeal to customers
of a
dependable predictable source of
supply. The corrugated packaging
industry had always been one driven by
production requirements. Acme's
management recognized that the requirements of the supplier had very
little to do with the needs of the customer. Acme then initiated the
concept of 100% "on time" delivery. Simply put customers could now
choose the speed of delivery. This could be accomplished because
Acme had actively pursued the theory of "overcapacity". Overcapacity
allows us to produce product in a more time sensitive manner. This
approach is very different than the traditional one of producing
what can physically be produced in a given time period. Therefore a
greater part of the value we bring to our customers is that all
orders processed through our system are a "priority" and are
produced "as needed". While our product can be viewed as a commodity
we bring value through availability. The resultant customer

In
2001 Acme moved to Hatboro, Pennsylvania, adjacent to the
Pennsylvania Turnpike. The new facility is 234,000 square feet
dedicated fully to manufacturing. Prior to moving to our new
facility, we installed two narrow-width corrugators, further
integrating our production capability. The rationale for the twelve
million dollar expansion undertaken in 2001 was to meet a need in
the marketplace unmet by traditional producers. Acme utilizes the
latest in technology. Computers set all our equipment and therefore
the size of the order is secondary to the need. Acme practices the
concept of "lean manufacturing" for itself and its customers. Lean
manufacturing means keeping inventories low, maintaining little if
any work in process, and shipping finished
product promptly when complete. We believe that by acting
responsively as a supplier we enhance our customer's performance and
profit.
Acme
ships within a 200-mile radius of our Hatboro facility. Our staff
now numbers 150 people and
we run a three shift, six-day operation. We truly believe that the
only thing we have in common with other manufacturers in our
industry is that we
produce the same product - corrugated. The telling differences are
many but the philosophy of
actually giving customers "what they want" has propelled our growth.
We think that our approach to "on time" delivery, maintaining over
capacity and supply chain management are timely, cost effective and
ultimately necessary. |
